Australian Sustainable Energy Company Converts Landfill Gas into Natural Gas

Feb 10, 2024

An Australian-based sustainable energy company has successfully transformed gas emissions from a landfill into renewable natural gas. This innovative initiative allows the gas to be used for heating homes and powering electrical generating plants.

The project was carried out in Lowellville, where a landfill has repurposed its gas emissions into natural gas. EDL, in collaboration with partners Republic Services, NW Natural Renewables, and Pennant Midwest, has upgraded a gas-to-energy power plant to function as a renewable natural gas facility.

The Limestone Renewable Natural Gas Facility is specifically designed to process and condition naturally produced gas from the decomposition of materials at the Carbon Limestone Landfill. It is projected that the facility will produce 1.7 million British thermal units of pipeline-quality natural gas by the year 2024.

Described as one of the largest plants of its kind in North America, the Limestone facility captures landfill gas that would otherwise be wasted and converts it into renewable natural gas. This renewable gas serves as a clean fuel source for vehicles, as well as for heating homes through the natural gas system and generating electricity.

The CEO of EDL, Richard DiGia, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its ability to transform gas emissions into a lower-carbon fuel source and therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Republic Services’ Area President, Chris Nie, emphasized the positive environmental impact of the project and its contribution to reduced carbon footprint.

This landfill gas conversion initiative is a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly energy solution. By harnessing the potential of landfill gas, the project showcases the possibilities of renewable natural gas as a viable and cleaner alternative to conventional energy sources.
